Le grand-duché de Berg et Clèves est créé en l805 pour Murat ; son armée comprend à ce moment
Le régiment de cavalerie part en Espagne en 1808 avec la Garde Impériale. Ses pertes sont très lourdes à Benavente, et les restes sont fondus dans les Chasseurs à cheval français. Un nouveau régiment, armé de la lance, est créé en décembre 1809, et envoyé à son tour en Espagne en 1810. Un second régiment, créé en 1811, aura ses 4 escadrons en Russie, où il sera détruit sur la Bérézina. Toutes ces unités sont à 4 escadrons de 160 hommes chacun.
Les deux premiers régiments d'infanterie sont aussi en Espagne en 1809, suivis par le 3° en 1810. Fin 1811 ils sont rappelés dans leur pays, sauf 1 bataillon du 3° régiment. En 1812 les 4 régiments se trouvent dans la 26° division du IX° Corps. Ils seront pratiquement détruits, et c'est l'armée prussienne qui recrutera sur le territoire de Berg et Clèves, après Leipzig, ses 280 et 290 régiments d'infanterie.
